Southern Monarch - Danaus erippus

Southern Monarch - (Himmeämonarkki) - Danaus erippus

11/2014 Entre Rios, Argentina
Wingspan: 110 mm
The Southern Monarch is native to South America and is very similar to the famous Monarch butterfly (D. plexippus). In fact, it used to be considered a subspecies of Monarch. One way of telling them apart is that the forewing inner edge has an orange trail in erippus, whereas the trail is black in plexippus.
I saw these very large and magnificent butterflies a couple of times in Argentina, but I never seemed to be able to get a decent photo of it. It was one of the last days of our visit when I finally nailed the underside. The topside remains to be photographed better in the future.
